100,000th Kilometre Prize Winner

Early in the morning on Saturday 1st May 2021, one PedalAid user hit a magic milestone for the app. Iain Price, from Newport, cycled the magic 100,000th km. This meant PedalAid users had collectively cycled the same distance as 2.5 times around Earth with the app since it was launched in 2017.

As the person to cycle the 100,000th kilometre, Iain was rewarded with a £250 voucher for cycling equipment to use at participating PedalAid 2021 partners. He chose to spend his voucher at Adrian’s Bike Shop which has stores in Freshwater and Cowes and sponsored PedalAid’s February and March 2021 Charity Challenges.

A worthy winner of the prize, Iain has frequently topped our monthly individual leaderboards since the app was launched in 2017. He kindly took some time to speak to us about winning the prize and his experience of using PedalAid.

How does it feel to be the person who reach 100,000th km?

I was delighted, having used the app since the very beginning it was great to be the one to reach this exceptional milestone.

Were you aiming to be the one to hit the target?

I saw the ads that informed everyone that the target was close. I have to admit I got up early that morning knowing that there was 31k left to the target. It was a frosty and foggy morning but dry, which is always good. However by the time I finished my ride I could not be sure whether there was someone else out there somewhere just as the target was hit.

What do you like about using the PedalAid app?

The support it gives different local charities every month, I feel it helps to encourage people to get out and ride, I do feel that there is a little rivalry to be at the top of the leaderboard at the end of each month (well, definitely from me). It’s also nice that there is a chance to win a prize at the end of the month whether you have completed 10k or 500k.

What do you like about of using the Red Squirrel Trail?

It’s just beautiful throughout all the seasons, the changes as the year goes on are just fascinating. Day and night the wildlife is amazing from squirrels to foxes, owls, sheep, cows, horses, badgers, cuckoos, and any number of other animals and birds even spiders.

Why do you think people should get on board with the app?

As above for the charities, for the scenery/wildlife and just the health benefits from exercising.

Is the fundraising side important to you?

Yes, If riding a bike can help local charities and my health it’s a win win.

Has it encouraged you to cycle more and what benefits have you seen personally?

I have always ridden a lot, however throughout the pandemic I think it has been my best release for any frustrations or worries. Luckily my family have all now started riding and they have all joined the app so we can now all enjoy the Red Squirrel trail together. I’m also lucky living in Newport as it’s just around the corner for me, and living only 1 mile from my work it’s the perfect place to complete a quick 8-10 miles before going in and the same after work.

What do you think you’ll spend the voucher on?

I’m not sure yet but I think my daughters have some ideas!
